Abstract

This is a case study about representations of rational numbers on the number line made by hand by a high school student and using an interactive computer program. At the beginning the student’s representations showed a clear understanding of how to represent order among different numbers on the number line, but not how to represent distances between them correctly. The form of representation used (decimals or fractions) also was important for her ability to show her understanding about distances between different rational numbers. The study reveals the thinking of the student, her difficulties and progress, through her interactions with the interviewer and the computer program
